The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors gave the USPS the go-ahead to request an advisory opinion from the Postal Regulatory Commission on its plan to cut mail delivery to five days.
The USPS will make this formal request March 30.
Last week the commission said this opinion could take as long as nine months.
Earlier this month, Postmaster General Jack Potter told a Congressional subcommittee that cutting Saturday delivery could save the USPS as much as $3.1 billion a year at a time when its revenue and mail volume are continuing to decline.
This plan calls for the USPS to continue accepting drop-shipped bulk mail as well as delivering and receiving express mail seven days a week. The USPS does need Congressional approval to make many of these changes, which are not expected to be implemented until 2011 at the earliest.
