Blockbuster has begun take two of a successful incentive that pairs avid gamers with the games they love and relevant prizes.
The Play 2 Win Sweepstakes! offers gamers the chance to win trips, collectibles, home electronics and other prizes by renting the featured game.
First up was the game Medal of Honor: European Assault as the promotion kicked off earlier this month. Customers who rent the games are automatically entered to win. The grand-prize winner gets a four-day, three-night trip for two to Washington, DC.
“We go after game genres to appeal to specific communities of gamers with incentives and prizes that speak to their likes and dislikes,” said Glenn Broderick, director of marketing for game rental for Blockbuster.
Additional games this year will be Destroy All Humans, with a grand prize of an LCD HDTV and custom Xbox system, and Fantastic Four, dangling a first edition Fantastic Four comic book signed by creator Stan Lee.
“If you’re a fan of [Fantastic Four] this is about as relevant a prize as you can get,” Broderick said.
Second and third-place winners will receive such prizes as a yearlong Blockbuster Game Pass.
Broderick said that people who play games aren’t just fans of all games but of specific genres and as it works through the promotional period it hopes to cover every major gaming genre and community.
“In total, we get the whole gaming industry by addressing them piece by piece by piece,” he said.
This is the second year in a row that Blockbuster has run the Play 2 Win Sweepstakes! The titles used in the sweeps outperformed forecasts by margins of 10% to 40%.
“The results are a validation of the idea,” Broderick said.
