Amazon.com’s Christmas was very merry indeed: In the run-up to Dec. 25, the Seattle-based online retailer logged its highest-volume single day ever (2.8 million items, or 32 per second, shipped). Additionally, consumer electronics surpassed books as its largest sales category for the first time. The company did not release revenue figures for the period.
Other highlights from the company’s holiday 2004 season include:
*Within its music category, the online marketer set a company record by selling more than one million units for two consecutive weeks
*DVD orders set a one-week sales record. One title, “Lord of the Rings, Return of the King Extended Edition” set a single-title one-day record by moving 13,000 copies on Dec. 14
*The jewelry and watches category sold one watch per minute since Nov. 25
