The Scotts Co. will buy gardening catalog and retailer Smith & Hawken for $72 million.
Scotts will expand Smith & Hawken beyond its 56 retail stores, store-within-a-store departments in garden centers and catalogs. Its 2004 sales are projected at $145 million. Marysville, OH-based Scotts’ sales top $2 billion.
Smith & Hawken will keep its Novato, CA, headquarters and CEO Barry Gilbert will continue to run the company. The deal is expected to close Oct. 1.
“The Smith & Hawken brand is the gold standard in outdoor living and is an outstanding fit with our strategy to extend our reach into adjacent lawn and garden categories, and to own industry-leading brands in every category in which we compete,” said Scotts CEO Jim Hagedorn in a statement.
