Oreo has a new flavor it launched Monday—Firework. But perhaps what’s setting off even more explosive pyrotechnics is its new $500,000 cookie flavor contest.
The #MYOreo Creation Contest challenges consumers to develop its next cookie flavor. People submit their creations using #MyOREOCreation and #Contest on their social media platforms or text a short code with their idea. The submissions will be judged on taste; a smart, creative design; and the flavor’s uniqueness. The public and sponsor judges will vote for the winners this summer.
Not only does the grand-prize winner get $500,000 and a trip to New York City, but he or she also gets their flavor creations placed in market this summer. Three finalists each win a $25,000 check and a chance to have their OREO cookie creations produced and available in market for a limited time.
The contest began May 8 and runs through July 14.
Oreo Firework is a limited-edition cookie that when eaten, feels like fireworks going off in your mouth. The cookies have the same crème filling and chocolate wafers as the traditional Oreo, but take it up a notch with rainbow-colored specks in the frosting that give the person consuming the cookie a more exciting experience.
Innovating flavors and flavor combinations is part of Oreo’s DNA, owned by Nabisco, and marketing strategy to keep the brand fresh and modern. Last summer, it tried one of its most unique flavors—Swedish Fish. The cookie had a cherry-flavored crème and was sold only at Kroeger. And last month, Oreo partnered with Christina Aguilera, Brazilian football star Neymar da Silva Santo, Jr. and Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal in the #OREODunkSweepstakes for a chance to win to win a Wonderfilled VIP dunking experience in New York or Los Angeles.
