Observers expect that postal reform bills will be introduced this month to address the U.S. Postal Service’s financial needs and give it some of the freedoms it’s long sought.
Less certain, however, are suggested changes in the USPS’ governance structure and in its relationship with labor unions.
At deadline, Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Thomas Carper (D-DE), and Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, were set to introduce bills to reform the USPS based mostly on the findings of the President’s Commission on the U.S. Postal Service, which released its report last July.
Collins, chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, has held eight hearings on these issues in recent months.
