Mail Marketing Up and Running After Devastating Fire

Mail Marketing Inc., Haworth, NJ, is continuing operations after a fire several weeks ago devastated the building it had run its business from for the past 28 years.

The list management and brokerage firm has rented space next door to its offices at 171 Terrace St. and in nearby Northvale, said Hal Roberson, who has been president of the company for 12 years. It continues to operate with all existing staff using the same phone and fax numbers.

“We were filling orders 48 hours after the fire,” Roberson said.

Roberson said that despite the extensive smoke and water damage that the building sustained he was able to rescue many current records and files kept in metal file cabinets and desks located on the building’s second floor. Numerous old records kept in the basement were lost. Plans call for a move back to the site which is expected to be rebuilt in about four months, he said.

He said he doesn’t believe that business has been impacted by the disaster. “We think most of our clients are understanding and confident of our capabilities and are still there for us,” he said.

The fire swept through the empty two-story building, built in 1904, at about 7 am on April 21. Roberson was notified immediately by an employee’s husband who volunteers as a firefighter in a nearby town. “I was there with the first two trucks,” he said.

Barry Connell, fire chief for the Haworth Fire Department said the fire was started by a gas space heater in a store room that was either defective or had been left on high. The heater ignited nearby papers and boxes.
