Indian Call Center Worker Arrested for Hacking, Theft

A call center employee at HSBC’s Bangalore, India offshore operation has been arrested on for computer hacking and stealing 233,000 pounds ($421,811) from the accounts of some of the bank’s UK customers, according to wire service reports.

The 24-year-old Nadeem Kashmiri was arrested by police on Wednesday after going on the run when the bank discovered the fraud.

He is currently being held by Bangalore’s cyber crime police and could face up to five years in jail if found guilty of hacking and breach of confidentiality charges.

Reports in India claim Kashmiri was paid just under 1,000 pounds ($1,810) to leak the confidential account details by a criminal gang in the UK, which allegedly used the information to set up money transfer from the victims’ accounts.
