Canadian forest products company Tembec Inc. has reached an agreement wit environmental organization ForestEthics to work together to identify and protect endangered forests in North America’s largest remaining wilderness, Canada’s Boreal.
The two organizations reaffirmed their commitment to Forest Stewardship Council certification (FSC) as the certification system that assures buyers that products are free of social and environmental controversy and sets standards for forest management, according to Tembec.
In January, San Francisco-based Forest Ethics ran an ad in The New York Times aimed at shaming the Victoria’s Secret catalog and its parent Limited Brands Inc. for apparently using paper from endangered Canadian forests in the more than 1 million catalogs it sends per day.
This was part of an overall effort aimed at making catalogers more environment-friendly in their paper procurement practices (Direct, March 15).
