Direct Focus’ Sales Strong in First Quarter

Direct Focus Inc. reported net income of $24 million in first-quarter 2002, up from $14.7 million last year. The company’s sales rose 82%, from $74.9 million to $135.9 million.

“In our direct business, we believe that, even with a sluggish economy, we are benefiting from favorable advertising rates and a ‘nesting effect,'” Brian Cook, the Vancouver, WA-based firm’s CEO said in a statement.

Direct sales amounted to 67% of the company’s total revenue during the first quarter, down from 77% a year ago. During the quarter, the company also completed its acquisition of StairMaster Sports/Medical Inc. The quarter ended March 31.
