Less than a week after CEO Brad Blum stepped down, Burger King Corp. has named Greg Brenneman, a former airline exec, as its new head effective Aug. 1.
Brenneman, currently chairman and CEO of TurnWorks, Inc., a Houston-based private equity firm, is widely recognized for his ability to turn around companies by focusing on customer service.
“We have worked with Greg in the past and know him well,” the company said. “He is an accomplished and experienced executive whose drive for fast-paced change and enhanced performance will be invaluable to Burger King Corporation as it strengthens its position in the fast food industry.”
Brenneman, 42, had previously worked as CEO of Pricewaterhouse Coopers Consulting and as president and COO of Continental Airlines. He joins the No. 2 QSR chain as Burger King’s ninth CEO in 15 years. Blum stepped down from the post after only 18 months, citing “strategic differences” with the company’s board of directors (Xtra, June 6, 2004).
Burger King reported same-store sales rose 7.5% in May 2004, the highest jump since November 1999. Burger King has more than 11,220 restaurants worldwide and sales of $11.1 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2003.
