Australians Introduce Strong Anti-Spam Legislation: Reports

The Australian parliament has introduced legislation calling for commercial organizations that send unsolicited e-mail to be fined $650,000, according to published reports.

The laws, which do not cover non-commercial organizations, would apply only to messages originating in Australia. The Australian Communications Authority would be responsible for issuing warnings, fines and others disciplinary actions against marketers.

Once the bill is passed, direct marketers would have 120 days to implement safeguards against sending unsolicited messages. While reports did not give a specific timetable, the legislation is expected to sail through the parliament.
