American Airlines On Board as NYC Sports Museum Sponsor

American Airlines has struck a marketing deal to become the official airline of the Sports Museum of America.

The airline will have digital signage in several areas of the lower Manhattan museum, which opened its doors last month. American will also include the museum as a New York City attraction in special getaway offers it extends to customers, according to John Urban, president and general manager of the museum.

“They were looking for a downtown opportunity and they liked the fact that the museum covered all sports,” Urban said.

The fledgling museum is seeking additional corporate sponsors. Cisco Systems is a founding partner and American Express is a promotional partner, according to Urban, who said Amex extends family discounts to card members.

Boasting a Cadillac admission fee of $27, the museum can presumably use all of the corporate underwriting it can get. Urban claims the museum has relationships with 60 sports organizations, including the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame, which lend it artifacts for exhibition.

The 30,000-square foot facility claims 1,000 artifacts, 21 films and 30 interactive stations in its exhibit area.

Financial terms of the American Airlines deal were not disclosed.
