Women More Likely to Buy on Impulse Online

A recent survey conducted by GSI Commerce shows that 55% of women between the ages of 45-54 make impulse buys online, compared to 38% of men in the same age range.

Women are more likely to be swayed to make an impulse buy because of a free return offer, and they are more prone to make online impulse purchases because a gift is “perfect” for someone they know.

Limited time offers, including sales, rebates, and free shipping draw more women (55%) to make impulse buys than men (38%).

Fiona Dias, executive vice president of partner strategy & marketing for GSI, says that these findings highlight the need for e-retailers to create “online marketing strategies that account for gender preferences and proclivities, especially as competition to attract consumers heats up during the holiday shopping crunch.”

Still, there are similarities between both sexes. Thirty-four percent of men and women value a well-known site or brand, while 46% of women and 47% of men say that a professional Web site design is important.
