Williams-Sonoma Net Earnings Skyrocket

Williams-Sonoma Inc. reported net earnings of $15.4 million for the first quarter ended May 5, a jump over $500,000 for the same period in 2001.

The direct marketer and retailer attributed these results to strong growth in the Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids units as well as to reduced catalog advertising costs.

Net revenues increased 14.6% to $478.4 over $417.6 million.

Catalog and online net sales increased 6.3% to $178.3 million in the first quarter versus $167.7 million last year. Overall net retail sales increased 20% to $267.6 million from $223 million.

“These earnings were the strongest first quarter earnings in the history of the company and every operational area contributed to the better than expected performance,” CEO Dale Hilpert said in a statement.

Williams-Sonoma is based in San Francisco.
