Web Beats Apps on Tablets

Posted on by Brian Quinton

Tablets are coming up fast, but are they a lightweight laptop or a large-screen mobile device? Both, of course. But in their mobile guise, while tablets are seeing dedicated apps designed for their users, a new study from mobile analytics firm Zokem finds tablet owners much more likely to bypass apps for the web browser than smartphone users.

The research, conducted in April 2011 among panels of mobile users, found that smartphone users are six times more likely to open an app on their phones than to access the Web browser. But that differential decreased markedly for users of tablet devices.

“It can be speculated that for tablets, the bigger screen and the better overall user experience in browsing contribute to the relatively high face time for web browsing,” says Zokem researcher Jing Wu.
