Survey Finds Surfers Blame ISPs for Spam

A new survey shows that e-mail users are not only annoyed by spam, but that many have and will do something about it by changing their Internet Service Provider in order to reduce or eliminate it.

The poll of 13,000 e-mail users uncovered that an increasingly large percentage of e-mail users hold ISPs responsible for the problem and few think ISPs have done a sufficient job in controlling it.

In the study, 24% of respondents said they believe that their ISPs provided spammers with their e-mail addresses. In addition, 74% believe that ISPs should regulate spam, compared with 15% who believe that federal, state or local government should do it.

The spam poll was conducted by GartnerGroup Inc., the Stamford, CT-based market researcher, and Bright Light Technologies Inc., a San Francisco e-mail services company, whose products include anti-spam software.
