Spiegel Catalog Sales Fall 42% In October

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

The Spiegel Group reported October sales of $171.9 million, off 21% from $217.9 million last year.

By division, Spiegel Catalog sales fell 42%, Newport News, 25% and Eddie Bauer, 9%. The period ended Oct. 26.

The firm attributed the results for Spiegel Catalog and Newport News to “a significant reduction in catalog pages circulated as well as the continuing impact of more-restrictive credit granting measures taken in the company’s private-label credit card business.”

Total direct sales declined 29 %. Online sales were flat for the month compared to last year and the group’s retail sales decreased 10% from a year ago.

For the 43 weeks ended Oct. 26, sales of $1.7 billion were off 18% from $2.1 billion one year ago.
