Sears Backs Home Rehab Campaign

Sears and Kmart marked Memorial Day by launching Heroes at Home, a campaign to help military families with home maintenance.

Sears Holdings Corp., the parent of both retail chains, has partnered with Rebuilding Together, a non-profit home rehabilitation organization, for three programs, starting with Heroes at Home. The second program will address preservation and rehabilitation of city neighborhoods; the third will provide home repairs to low-income residents.

Sears and Kmart will collect donations from shoppers for Heroes at Home, starting this past weekend in Sears stores and June 17 at Kmart and running through July 8. Consumers can also make donations online at Sears.com and Kmart.com.

The first Heroes at Home project is to remodel the home of Army Specialist Ryan C. Major of Silver Spring, MD, who was wounded in Iraq. Volunteers from Rebuilding Together, Sears and Kmart will equip his house with a wheelchair-accessible bedroom, bathroom and elevator.

“Sears Holdings’ support of Rebuilding Together shows the power of collaboration between corporations and non-profits,” said Rebuilding Together chief executive officer Gary Officer in a statement. “The in-store campaign is a wonderful opportunity for the public to contribute directly to programs that assist those who need our help most.”
