Sam Goody ‘Boycotters’ Get Gift Cards

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Sam Goody helped holiday shoppers turn lemons into gift cards last week with a Bad-Gift Boycott that gave away $8,000 in gift cards for its music stores.

“Boycotts” were held Dec. 27 at five Sam Goody stores in Minneapolis; Springfield, PA; Frisco, TX; Buffalo, NY; and Ventura, CA. Consumers brought in bad gifts they received for Christmas and put them in a giant dumpster in exchange for a Sam Goody gift card, ranging from $2 to $500.

Sam Goody gave away 1,250 cards (250 at each event) and collected over 1,000 gifts, which are then donated to local charities. The Minneapolis chapter of the American Cancer Society got Sam Goody’s haul from the Mall of America, and will re-sell the items at its annual garage sale fundraiser. P.R. shop Axiom Communications, Minneapolis, assisted with the events.

The chain also is running a national contest that lets consumers submit stories about their worst (and best) gifts for a chance to win a $20 Sam Goody gift card (50 in all).

Minneapolis-based Sam Goody, a division of Musicland, has 450 stores nationally.
