Plan to Revive Smith Bros. Cough Drops Fails

Posted on by Patty Odell

Last fall, thousands of retailers across the U.S. and Canada received cases of Smith Bros. Cough Drops and other products to stock their shelves. It was part of an ambitious plan to Smith Bros.revive the 168-year old brand. The plan included TV spots and in-store promotions with bearded NHL hockey players (the Smith brothers were both bearded).

The plan, however, backed by private equity firm York Capital Management, never really took off. The brand’s website still shows off new lines of health and wellness products and other items.

This article, from the Chicago Tribune, where Smith Bros. has been based, shares the history and, the rise and fall of this iconic brand.
