Internet marketer/auctioneer Onsale Inc., Menlo Park, CA, has agreed to buy Egghead.com Inc., the online computer hardware and software retailer, for about $400 million in stock, according to wire service reports. The company will operate under the Egghead.com name and Web address but hold auctions under the Onsale name.
The combined companies have about 3 million monthly visitors to their Web sites and about 2.8 million customer records.
Egghead.com’s chairman and CEO George Orban will become chairman of the combined company. Jerry Kaplan, Onsale chief executive, will hold that post in the new company.
