NFL, FedEx, Department of Commerce and Pearson Education Are Among the Top-Gaining Sites in August

Education, books and weather sites were among the top-gaining website categories in August, according to comScore. Meanwhile, ESPN, Answers.com and Adobe each gained significant ground in the ranking of the top 50 Web properties during the month.

According to comScore, the NFL Internet Group was the top-gaining online property in August with a 92 percent month-over-month boost in the number of unique visitors. FedEx followed with a 62 percent gain, while the Department of Commerce gained 49 percent.

Pearson Education (35 percent), AccuWeather Sites (34 percent), IB Times (31 percent), DirecTV Sites (30 percent), Liberty Mediea Holding Corporation (29 percent) and Media General Sites (27 percent) rounded out the list of the top 10 gaining properties in August.

The top-gaining site category was Education – Information with a 19 percent month-over-month increases in the number of unique visitors. Pearson Education led the way in this category, while HotChalk (up 31 percent) and ClassesUSA.com (up 8 percent), About.com Education (up 29 percent) also saw big gains.

Directories/Resources – Shipping followed with a 17 percent gain, while Career Resources & Development – Training & Education experienced a 12 percent gain.

Retail – Books (11 percent), Community – Family & Parenting (9 percent), Gambling – Lotto/Sweepstakes (9 percent), Community – Pets (8 percent), Health – Pharmacy (8 percent), Business/Finance – News/Research (8 percent) and News/Information – Weather (7 percent) rounded out the list of the top 10 gaining site categories in August.

Weather and health sites benefited from Hurricane Irene and allergies, according to comScore.

Google Sites remained the top overall U.S. online property in August with 183.4 million unique visitors. Yahoo Sites followed with 177.5 million visitors, while Microsoft Sites boasted 177.2 million visitors.

Facebook (162.4 million), AOL (109.2 million), Amazon Sites (101.7 million), Turner Digital (94.3 million), Ask Network (88.4 million), Glam Media (85.1 million) and Viacom Digital (82.6 million) rounded out the top 10 properties in August.

ESPN (24), Answers.com (25) and Adobe Sites (26) each jumped up five positions on the list.

According to comScore, the total Internet audience in August was made up of 216.0 million unique visitors.

Google Ad Network topped comScore’s Ad Focus ranking in August with a reach of 93.4 percent, followed by Yahoo Network Plus with a reach of 87.4 percent and AOL Advertising with a reach of 86.9 percent.
