Don Mokrynski, founder of Mokrynski & Associates, gave as good as he got tonight during his induction as the Direct Marketing Association’s List Leader of the Year.
Mokrynski, the brunt of much humor for alleged personal tics like his favoring of polyester suits during the 1970’s, said of the award: “It’s about bloody time.” He noted that Ben Franklin “had to be dead two centuries before he got any recognition from the DMA.”
But last year’s List Leader, Chris Paradysz, assured Mokrynski that the world of celebrity awaited him.
On a serious note, colleagues praised Mokrynski as a kindly and loyal list pioneer who helped many catalogs get off the ground. Among his many innovations was hiring mailers as brokers.
Mokrynski urged the audience to “accept the universal truth that some customers will drive you to the precipice of insanity.” But he added that “this business keeps every nerve ending in your body dancing.”
