MLB Pitches Airport Access to ALCS Games

Airport travelers can now watch live MLB.TV coverage of the American League Championship Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays on laptop computers through Boingo Wireless.

This latest cyberspace connection to Major League Baseball video content is the result of a deal between MLB Advanced Media and Boingo, which is enabling the WiFi service in 23 participating airports around the country.

The Red Sox-Rays series is accessible on-demand in airport waiting areas for a $4 four-hour pass. Viewers can also view the games using the TBS Hot Corner on MLB.com streaming application featuring an interactive mosaic with four different camera angles.

“These are live games without blackout restrictions,” MLB.com spokesperson Matthew Gould said.

Baseball fans can also watch video of thousands of MLB games archived on the http:/www.MLB.com Web site through the MLB.TV “Airport Edition.” Boingo users receive a prompt about the MLB.TV wireless video service when they turn on their laptops.

MLB.TV also made games in the American League Division Series available through Boingo.

Business travelers are the primary target for MLBAM’s wireless access strategy, since business travel is on the uptick in the fall.

In a separate development, MLB.com has added near-live video highlights of playoff games to its mobile content package. The 30-second video clips are part of the MLB.com post-season alerts feature.
