Metromail Unit Sale Boosts R.R. Donnelley’s 1998 Net Income

R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co., Chicago, reported net sales for 1998 rose 2.6% from last year to just over $5 billion. For the fourth quarter, net sales were essentially unchanged at $1.4 billion. Net income for 1998 totaled $295 million, up from $131 million in 1997. For the fourth quarter, net income totaled $92 million, compared with a loss of $9 million in 1997’s fourth quarter.

During 1998, R.R. Donnelley sold its remaining interests in Metromail Corp. and Donnelley Enterprise Solutions Inc. Gains on the sales, totaling $101 million after taxes, were partly offset by an $80 million charge to write off goodwill related to Corporate Software & Technology Inc.
