That settles it–George W. Bush is the next President of the United States.
And the next Senator from New York will be Rick Lazio.
Those are the results of a straw poll conducted yesterday by MeritDirect, Stamford, CT, during its first Business-to-Business Co-op conference in Stamford. Company founder Ralph Drybrough conducted similar polls while employed at Direct Media, and accurately called both the 1992 and 1996 elections.
Of 95 direct marketers voting, 54% cast their votes for Bush. Al Gore received 42%, and Pat Buchanan and Ralph Nader each drew 1%.
In addition, there was one write-in vote for Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura The respondent’s comment was, “More wrestlers, less subterfuge.”
In the New York Senate race, Republican Rick Lazio beat Hillary Rodham Clinton by a tally of 59% to 41% of the vote (including non-New Yorkers). Of the 18 New York State residents who voted, Lazio won the votes of 15–or 86%.
The attendees were also surveyed on their attitudes on some current issues. The results:
* 92% want to eliminate the estate tax (or Death Tax)
* 75% are against taxation of Internet transactions
* 75% are in favor of allowing Social Security recipients to invest part of their benefits in the stock market
* 71% favor vouchers for students to attend private schools
Direct marketers also seem as jaded with politics as Americans in general. One person called it: “A mess–a bunch of idiots.”
