Letter to the Editor
[Re: Meet the Broker: Arlene Baum, Direct Listline Feb. 29, 2008 (MeetTheBroker) (directmag.com/meet_the_broker/baum)]

Your article on Arlene Baum inspired me to write you this note.

Arlene’s old boss Bernice Bush was the Queen of Christian lists. I believe her offices were down the street from the Trinity Broadcasting Network. I don’t know if she is still with us. I can imagine that Bernice could tell you some great stories about some of her high profile clients. Bernice was among the first list professionals in Southern California. She was a contemporary of Edith Roman and Rose Harper, both of whom were among a handful of professional women who founded their own list fiefdoms decades ago.

Arlene may have mentioned that Christian lists outnumber their secular progressive counterparts by a ratio of 3/1 in favor of Christian files. The so-called “left” has yet to master direct marketing in all of its manifestations. Perhaps that explains why secular progressives are working to ban direct mail nationwide, as though they were leveling the playing field.

Richard Viguerie, who helped Ronald Reagan raise millions via direct mail, has marketed some large Christian donor lists for years. It would be interesting for you to interview him, particularly as we near the fall elections.
