E-mail List Price Decline Continues
By Jim Emerson

Data card prices for consumer and business-to-business e-mail lists can be expected to continue declining in the months ahead, as list owners lower published prices to reflect more typically negotiated CPM rates.

“Pricing on e-mail lists has always been high and has always been negotiated off the rate card,” said Ray Tesi, senior vice president at Worldata.

The Worldata List Price Index has tracked declining e-mail list prices for several quarters. The spring index reported consumer e-mail prices declined by an average of $4/M to $163/M. Business-to-business e-mail file pricing declined by an average of $3/M to $277/M, compared to one year ago.

This trend for lower e-mail list prices began with the dot-com bust, but it’s continuing now because net name arrangements (common for postal lists) are not available for e-mail lists. So, list users try to negotiate a lower CPM on e-mail lists instead, Tesi said.

Other Worldata Index highlights released Thursday indicate newsletter postal list prices increased by an average of $3/M to $178/M. Donor list prices increased an average of $3/M to $79/M.

The largest reported prices increases were for health, government and education “public sector” lists, which rose an average of $4/M between March 2005 and March 2006, according to Worldata.
