GAP BETWEEN ONLINE, OFFLINE CONSUMERS NARROWING

The average Web surfer is starting to look a lot like the average consumer, according to a survey from Stamford, CT-based market research company InsightExpress.

According to the survey, the online gender ratio now mirrors the U.S. population with a split of 49 percent males/51 percent females. Average household income online is $49,800, compared with $40,816 from the offline segment, per the 2000 U.S. Census. Adults 18-49 make up 76 percent of the online community, compared with 63 percent of the overall population.

“The most common criticism of the Internet as a marketing vehicle is that it does not reach the average consumer,” says InsightExpress coo Lee Smith. “Our profile of the online consumer should silence that notion.”
