FTC Promotes Do Not Call List to Canada

The Federal Trade Commission has recommended its telemarketing Do Not Call Registry to the Canadian Parliament.

In a statement submitted Friday to the Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science, and Technology, FTC Associate Director Lois C. Greisman explained the Telemarketing Sales Rule and Do Not Call Registry provision and outlined the Registry’s operation and design as well as its the fees and costs.

As of last month, the FTC has brought seven Do Not Call cases and obtained four settlements. It has also brought four cases alleging various Do Not Call scams, in which defendants have offered to place consumers on the National Registry or provide other protections against unwanted calls in exchange for fees.

Greisman also noted that the Federal Communications Commission, which also administers the DNC, has issued 16 citations and entered into two consent decrees over violations of the Registry. To date, the Registry contains more than 92 million telephone numbers.
