Today Foursquare unveiled its Foursquare for Business app for iPhone and Android smartphones. In its blog post announcing the new app, the company says it’s meant to make it easier for small-business owners to share news with their customers right from their phones.

“With the Foursquare for Business companion app, managers can create a Foursquare update and easily cross-post it to Facebook and Twitter at the same time,” according to the blog post. “They can also use the app to see recent check-ins, turn specials on and off, and look at business data.”

This announcement comes as Facebook’s updated Nearby feature in its mobile app stirs the local-commerce pot.

According to Foursquare’s updated numbers for this month, the social network has 30 million users worldwide, more than 3 billion check-ins and more than 1 million merchants using its business platform.
