Former Domino’s CMO to Head Marketing at Wendy’s

Ken Calwell, the former chief marketing officer at Domino’s Pizza, is returning to his old stomping grounds, Wendy’s International, Inc., to become its new marketing head.

The position is expected to take effect once Triarc Cos. Inc, the firm that owns Arby’s and is buying Wendy’s, closes the deal during the second half of the year.

Calwell will replace Wendy’s Chief Marketing Officer Paul Kershisnick, who will remain with the company in a senior leadership marketing post, the company said.

Calwell, 46, started at Domino’s in July 2001 as executive vice president of build the brand, the firm’s top marketing post. The company later renamed that position chief marketing officer.

Before that, he worked for Wendy’s as vice president of new product marketing, research and testing responsible for creating, developing, researching and testing new brands, sales, profit-building ideas and concepts.

Before joining Wendy’s in 1998, Calwell held top-level marketing posts at Pepsico, Inc., Frito-Lay and Pizza Hut.

Calwell’s appointment comes as Triarc made other management changes at Wendy’s. David J. Karam, 50, will become the brand’s new president, replacing CEO and President Kerrii B. Anderson. Roland Smith, Triarc’s CEO, will become Wendy’s new CEO. Stephen D. Farrar, 57, will work as COO.

The management changes come as Triarc’s buyout of Wendy’s nears. The company in April said it would buy the fast-food chain for about $2.3 billion (Promo Xtra, April 25, 2008).
