Citi Cards, FreeCause Conduct Breast Cancer Campaign

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Citibank Citi Cards and FreeCause, a firm that links brands with social networks, have teamed up for a Facebook campaign aiming to raise $250,000 for breast cancer research and scholarships during October, breast cancer awareness month.

Citi Card is donating $50 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for each approved credit card application it receives through the Pink Ribbon community on Facebook. The money is to be directed for a scholarship fund to benefit children who have lost a parent to breast cancer and for research addressing aggressive forms of the disease that afflict younger women.

Pink Ribbon members are being encouraged to share their stories on why they are “passionately pink for the cure” and post them on the Pink Ribbon wall. The site also will features campaign updates and a link to CitiCards.com, where they can apply for a credit card.

A Pink Points game rewards other activities, including recruiting new members to the Pink Ribbon community, downloading a Citi/Komen Pink Ribbon toolbar, and completing a Citi credit card application. Points accrue for a drawing at the end of the campaign, with winners to receive an iPhone 3G.

FreeCause, which links brands with social networks, created the Pink Ribbon Community on Facebook last year.

“We started Pink Ribbon a year ago as a way for my friends and me to raise money for breast cancer since it had recently affected a family member,” said Matt Adkisson, CEO of FreeCause, in a release. “Our goal was not to ask anyone to give money, but to raise money by using applications that people normally use in their everyday lives.”
