Catalog Sales Help Save Jos. A. Bank Quarter After Retail Promotion Flop

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc., Hampstead, MA, had first-quarter 1999 net sales of $43.6 million, up 1% from $43.4 million a year ago. Net income fell from $800,000 to $500,000 during the same period.

The quarter ended May 1.

But catalog sales were up 16%, and the company’s Internet activity is “increasing significantly” said chairman and CEO Andrew A. Giordano in a statement. This mitigated a quarter in which comparable store sales were down 8%, spurred by an unsuccessful new in-store sales promotion that was discontinued in March.
