Catalina Net Income Increases

Supermarket electronic marketing program, Catalina Marketing Corp., St. Petersburg, FL, reports its net income for the third quarter ended Dec. 31, was $12 million on revenue of $67.6 million. This is up from net income of $10.9 million on revenue of $63.7 million in the third quarter ended Dec. 31, 1997.

For the nine-month period, net income — before a one-time charge reported in the second quarter — was $28.1 million on total revenue of $188.9 million, compared to net income of $24.7 million on revenue of $163.1 million reported for the same period last year.

In other developments during the quarter, Catalina received board approval to purchase up to $50 million of its common stock. Its Health Resource Publishing Co. business unit added 547 stores on a net basis during the quarter, finishing the quarter with a 3,733 pharmacy outlets versus 1,566 at the same time last year.

The company added 112 stores in the U.K. and France and signed a rollout agreement with Japan’s fifth-largest retail chain to install the network in 130 stores, bringing the number of stores on the network in Japan to 330. Catalina also acquired DCI Cardmarketing, a marketing services firm specializing in loyalty marketing services, the company announced Jan. 4.
