DMA Warns Members To Post Privacy Policies

Anticipating a new sweep of Internet shopping sites next month whose results to be reported to the Federal Trade Commission, the Direct Marketing Association has urged all its members to post privacy policies on their Web sites or face imminent regulation.

“We already know the market leaders on the Web are posting privacy policies, and letting Web site visitors know what information is collected about them, and how it is used for marketing purposes,” said consumer affaiors vice president Pat Faley,in a statement. “These e-commerce sites are also giving consumers the option to limit sharing of this information with others. And, of course, where young children are involved, marketers must reach out to parents to involve them before data are captured, as required by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.”
