Priming the Pump

Who wouldn’t like some free gasoline as gas prices remain at record levels? Well, a Sunoco promotion tied to NASCAR is offering consumers just that.

Sunoco launched a Free Fuel 5000 promotion last month to build repeat service station traffic and increase Sunoco visibility.

Through Aug. 31, drivers who pull up to Sunoco stations can get a decal identical to the ones placed on every NASCAR racecar. By placing the decal on their bumpers, drivers become eligible to win one or more of 5,000 redeemable gas cards worth $10. Teams of Sunoco spotters will canvass 500 Sunoco gas stations nationwide to award unsuspecting consumers with the gas cards. In addition, one driver who wins a gas card will be entered to win 10,000 gallons of gasoline.

The promotion is a way to reward our loyal customer base with the free gasoline offer, says Gerald Davis, Sunoco spokesperson.

Some 4,000 Sunoco gas stations from Maine to Florida (excluding NJ, MD, and VA) and west to Tennessee, Illinois and Michigan are participating, Davis says.

Advertisements for the promotion feature NASCAR drivers and blanket national NASCAR-related media. TV spots air on Fox, NBC and Speed Channel. Print ads appear in Sporting New, NASCAR Scene and in NASCAR race programs. Banner ads ran on Nascar.com. Service station P-O-P materials include pump-toppers, nozzle-talkers, and pole, door and island signage.

The promotion also reinforces Sunoco’s NASCAR sponsorship and helps to create awareness with NASCAR fans. It was designed to bring in some non-NASCAR fans, as well, Davis says.

Philadelphia-based Sunoco was named the Official Fuel for NASCAR races for 10 years beginning in 2004. Philadelphia-based SFGT Inc. handles the promotion.
