BigMoney.com, which recently unveiled its Top 50 companies making the best use of Facebook, has released a list of the Twitter 12, a ranking of the 12 companies who have figured out how to use Twitter most efficiently.

The New York Times tops the list, which was complied using a mix of metrics that include number of followers, growth from September through November, number of tweets, and “whether the account is doing anything besides providing a transplanted RSS feed,” BigMoney.com said. Those that made the list had to have at least 1 million followers.

And, the Twitter 12 are:

1.The New York Times
2. E! Online
3. NBA
4. CNN Breaking News
5. Whole Foods
6. BNO News
7. Etsy
8. Health Magazine
9. JetBlue
10. Silicon Alley Insider
11. Dell Outlet
12. Amazon MP3

“Even if Twitter isn’t the future of social media, it’s certainly the shiniest, newest thing flitting in front of us. And businesses love shiny new things, BigMoney.com’s Chadwick Matlin blogged.
