MISSISSIPPI BECAME the 27th state to sue Port Washington, NY-based sweepstakes mailer Publishers Clearing House, claiming that the company uses false advertising in the mail pieces it sends out to senior citizens. Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore reportedly filed the suit after talks with Publishers Clearing House officials failed to stop mailings that promised millions of dollars in return for a commitment to purchase a magazine subscription. Moore said the mailings trick seniors who can least afford it. The suit seeks refunds for consumers as well as penalties and recovery of legal costs. Similar suits have been filed by 26 other states.
