Google Wins November

Posted on

Google claimed yet another search victory in November 2008 when it handled 64.1 percent of all searches in the U.S., according to Nielsen Online.

Searchers conducted nearly 5.2 billion searches on Google during the month, a 21.2 percent year-over-year increase.

Yahoo! was second and handled 16.1 percent of all searches in November. Searchers conducted nearly 1.3 billion queries on the search engine, a 1.4 percent decline from last year’s figure.

MSN/Windows Live was third with 9.1 percent of all searches. Users conducted more than 733 million searches in November, a 16.7 percent drop from last year’s figure.

AOL was fourth with 4.3 percent of the market, while Ask.com finished fifth with 2.3 percent of the market. While AOL saw its searches increase 3.6 percent year-over-year, Ask.com experienced a 6.0 percent shrinkage.

A total of nearly 8.1 billion searches were conducted in November, a 9.6 percent year-over-year increase.

While Google’s search stronghold appears to be secure in the U.S., it is seeing some challenges in overseas markets, including China. The country’s government began 2009 by issuing a warning to Google and homegrown search engine Baidu, among other sites, for failing to properly censor improper content.
