Facebook Lifts the ‘20% Text’ Rule for Pages’ Cover Images

Posted on

FacebookUp until now, Facebook Pages were prohibited from including text that occupied more than 20 percent of their cover images. But an update of Facebook’s Page terms on July 1 removed that rule, paving the way for brands and marketers to upload cover images with more prominent calls to action (CTAs).

Back on March 19, Facebook updated its guidelines for cover images by allowing Page administrators to mention prices, purchase information, contact information, references to Facebook features, CTAs and more in cover images. However, it enforced the 20 percent rule regarding text.

Now the guideline for covers says:

“All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines.”

This is a quiet-yet-important change for Facebook Page administrators, who can use cover images as a powerful tool for making a first impression on a visitor or compelling them to take a desired action. The ability to include bigger text and CTAs means marketers have some testing and tinkering to do.
