Starbucks Sells Millions of Discounted Cards at Costco

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Starbucks, for the first time, has packaged some of its gift cards together and is selling them at a discount.

Another first is where the cards are being sold: Costco.

The cards debuted there Oct. 1 and have been selling so well that Costco placed another order. The cards are expected to be available at the stores through Christmas.

Gift packs of five, $20 cards sells for $79.95.

“It’s just a way for us to extend that card experience outside of our stores,” Starbucks spokesperson Alisa Martinez said.

In a recent financial release, Starbucks’ CEO Howard Shultz was excited about the response to the promotion.

“The enthusiastic response to our special Starbucks card offering through Costco bodes well for our Holiday season, and we expect the millions of cards sold to begin generating traffic after the holidays as well,” he said.

Starbucks has had a long history with Costco, which sells its coffee and other grocery products, she said.

In addition to its stores and at Starbucks.com, the gift cards are sold at grocery and drug stores nationwide.
