Expanding Planet: Giant Eagle gives U-pons a try.
Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, is the latest grocer to offer online coupons via Planet U, San Francisco. Planet U’s U-pons Internet Coupons program lets Giant Eagle Advantage cardholders access paperless coupons at gianteagle.com for redemption in the chain’s 249 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.
Shoppers click on offers that are transmitted to Giant Eagle’s point-of-sale system and redeemed when the shopper presents the card at checkout. Planet U has signed eight supermarket and drugstore chains to redeem U-pons in a total of 3,213 stores. The company claims redemption rates as high as 20 percent.
News America Marketing, New York City, has sold U-pons as an Internet companion to its SmartSource promotional services since signing a marketing agreement with Planet U in July.
