Coca-Cola Pushes Green Theme at Beijing Games

Coca-Cola will screen a film about seven “environmental champion” torchbearers as part of a series of green-themed promotions at the summer games in Beijing.

“Environmental Champions,” features seven individuals who were selected by Coke as torchbearers on the Olympic torch tour it co-sponsored because of their contributions to environmentally friendly initiatives in their respective countries.

The people include Russian biological scientist Nikoay Drozdov, Chinese environmental scientist Liu Hong-Liang and Anna Tibaijuka, United Nations under-secretary-general and executive director of the UN Programme on Human Settlements.

The world debut screening will take place tonight in the Coca-Cola “Shuang Experience Center” in the Olympic Green complex. The individual vignettes were shot and edited by student filmmakers in the torchbearers’ home countries.

As part of its effort to push its environmentally conscious profile, Coke is using 5,600 “eKOfresh” refrigeration units at Olympic venues featuring a natural refrigerant that is free of hydrofluorcarbons to keep its beverages cool for distribution.

All 2008 Olympic athletes have received Coke T-shirts made from a blend of cotton and recycled PET plastic bottles. All Paraolympians will get Coke visors also made from recycled PET.

Coke is also supporting efforts to improve Beijing’s air quality by operating a fleet of electric or human-power delivery vehicles for Olympic venues during the games.
