Catalog Efficiency Cuts Loss for Hanover Direct

Hanover Direct Inc. had first quarter revenue of $144.3 million, up $14.1 million from the first quarter of 2000. For the quarter, Weehawken, NJ-based cataloger had a net loss of $7.6 million, compared with $13.4 million a year ago. The quarter ended March 31.

The company saw increased demand across its four core catalog brands: Domestications; Improvements; Silhouettes; and The Company store. In first quarter 2000, the company mailed out 69.3 million catalogs and had 4.9 million customers make a purchase from them, a 7.1 percent response rate.

But in the quarter just ended, the company mailed out 72.4 million catalogs, and received 5.3 million orders, netting a response rate of 7.3%.

The company also trimmed its staff by 46 individuals, and as a result took a $1.1 million charge.
