Social mediaAccording to data from GlobalWebIndex, a research firm, Facebook is the king of social media, boasting 51 percent of all global Internet users as its user base in the fourth quarter of 2012. Google+ took the No. 2 spot with 25 percent of the worldwide Internet population, while YouTube and Twitter each claimed 21 percent. Qzone, Sina Weibo, Tencent, Youku and Tudou, all China-only social platforms, are next on the list. LinkedIn followed to claim the No. 10 spot.

Facebook has 903 million accounts across 31 markets among 16-65-year-olds, according to GlobalWebIndex. However, the company notes that taking into account the 10 percent of global Internet users it doesn’t yet survey and users who are younger than 16 and older than 65, Facebook’s announcement in October of its 1 billion monthly active users seems to hold true.

From the second to the fourth quarter, Twitter saw the biggest increase in active users, followed by Facebook and Google+.
