dELiA’s Reports Loss Amid Increasing Sales

dELiA’s Inc., a New York-based apparel cataloger, reported a net loss of $2.3 million for the quarter ended May 1.

Net sales for the first quarter increased 34% to $41.8 million compared with the same period last year.

The company attributed the loss to lower gross margins resulting from lower fill rates caused by lean inventory levels. It also cited markdowns, heavy promotions at its soon-to-be-shuttered Screeem! Stores, and higher selling, general and administrative expenses.
