Twitter Allows Unlimited Characters for Direct Messages

On Wednesday, Twitter lifted its long-held defining characteristic of 140-character tweets for private tweets.

twitter125This article is important for marketers too, not just from a news-to-note perspective, but it also lays out the path Twitter is on to make its service more useful and easy to navigate. A Twitter product manager declined to comment on whether the same lift on characters limits will one day apply to public messages. Some 67% of marketers and 66 million consumers use Twitter, according to an eMarketer survey. That compares to 64.5% and 48 million respectively in 2014.

Twitter is under huge pressure from the “exploding” popularity of WhatsApp and Snapchat as its own growth has stalled. This is a good update on what Twitter is up to.
