Live From the U.S. Open: Serena Shows Off New Styles

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY—Tennis star and Nike pitch-person Serena Williams showed off the new tennis attire she designed for Nike at a pair of events that led up to the U.S. Open.

Williams’ new line of on-the-court wear was unveiled at Niketown on Friday, and she wore them on the court for the first time during an exhibition match Saturday at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess.

The collection features proprietary four-way stretch denim with moisture management properties created specifically for Serena’s U.S. Open appearance.

Nike designers also built cooling details into the rest of the multi-piece collection—from moisture-wicking fabric that pulls moisture away from Serena’s body to Dri-FIT mesh designed to be breathable and to help keep her dry on court.

“I was going to wear the black mesh, which is kind of see-through,” said Williams after teaming up in a mixed-doubles match with Mike Bryan against her sister, Venus, and Bryan’s brother, Bob. “I was going to wear it today, but there are a lot of kids here.”

Williams also debuted a new shoe and boot with Nike Shox technology, marking the first time the technology is being applied to tennis footwear. The shoe will be available in January 2005.
